Meet Torchic
A tiny orange chick with a tuft of feathers that flickers like a candle flame, Torchic has been winning over trainers since it first hatched onto the scene in Generation III. As the Fire-type starter of the Hoenn region, it sits alongside Treecko and Mudkip as one of the three Pokémon that Professor Birch offers at the beginning of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Torchic is a small, round bird with bright orange plumage, a cream-colored belly, and feathery yellow crests above each eye. Its most distinctive feature is the small flame-like tuft on top of its head, hinting at the fire that burns inside it. Despite its cute appearance, it can spit fireballs hot enough to leave opponents scorched, though it can't yet breathe sustained flames the way its evolutions can. In the games, Torchic is a reliable early-game partner that grows into the powerful Fire/Fighting-type Combusken and then the towering Blaziken, giving players a fast, hard-hitting attacker by the time they reach the Hoenn League. But its fame extends well beyond competitive play. May, one of the anime's main protagonists, receives a Torchic of her own during the Advanced Generation series, and the little starter quickly becomes a fan favorite as it grows alongside her on the road to becoming a top coordinator.Abilities and Battle Strengths
Torchic arrives as one of Hoenn's three starter Pokémon, a Fire-type chick with an endearing look and a genuinely useful battle trajectory. It is not a powerhouse in its first form, but its evolution line—Combusken and then Blaziken—turns it into one of the more threatening starters in the franchise.
Abilities
Torchic has two possible abilities. Blaze is the standard starter ability: when Torchic's HP drops to one-third or below, the power of its Fire-type moves increases by 50 percent. This gives it a late-game punch when it is cornered. Its hidden ability, Speed Boost, is the more valuable one competitively, raising its Speed by one stage at the end of every turn. Speed Boost on a Torchic is a long-term investment, since the ability truly shines on Blaziken.
Strengths
- Strong offensive typing. Fire hits Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel for super effective damage, giving Torchic a clear role against common early-game opponents.
- Solid evolution payoff. Torchic becomes Combusken at level 16 and Blaziken at level 36, ending as a Fire/Fighting dual type with excellent coverage.
- Speed Boost potential. With its hidden ability, Torchic can snowball into a fast sweeper that outspeeds nearly everything after a few turns.
- Good early utility. Ember, Peck, and later moves like Flamethrower and Blaze Kick carry it through the main story comfortably.
Weaknesses
- Fragile base stats. Torchic has low HP, Defense, and Special Defense, so it folds quickly to neutral hits, let alone super effective ones.
- Weak to common types. Water, Ground, and Rock moves tear through it. Rock is especially punishing because of the Stealth Rock hazard later in competitive play.
- Slow before evolving. Base 45 Speed means Torchic is outsped by many early opponents unless it runs Speed Boost.
- Physical leaning. Its best attacks are physical, but its early special moves are weak, so its damage output lags until it evolves.
Tips for Trainers
- Pair Torchic with a Water or Grass partner to cover its Rock, Ground, and Water weaknesses.
- If you are breeding for competitive play, hunt for the Speed Boost hidden ability and a Jolly or Adamant nature.
- Do not over-rely on Blaze. Keep Torchic healthy early, then let the ability trigger only when you are ready to trade hits.
- Use Protect on a Speed Boost set to bank a free Speed stage while scouting the opponent's move.
- Give it a Focus Sash or Eviolite if you are running Torchic or Combusken in a low-tier format, since survivability is the main problem.
- Evolve as soon as you reasonably can—Combusken and Blaziken are far more capable than Torchic in every matchup.
Evolution and Where to Find It
Torchic is the Fire-type starter of the Hoenn region, introduced in Generation III with Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. It evolves twice, giving it a clean three-stage line that has remained unchanged since its debut.
The Torchic evolution line
- Torchic (Fire) evolves into Combusken starting at level 16.
- Combusken (Fire/Fighting) evolves into Blaziken starting at level 36.
- Blaziken gains a Mega Evolution, Mega Blaziken, using the Blazikenite, though this was available only during specific events and cannot be obtained in the standard modern games.
So Torchic does evolve, and quite early compared to some starters. It picks up the Fighting type on its first evolution, which shapes its moveset and matchups for the rest of the line.
How to obtain Torchic
As a starter, Torchic is usually handed to the player rather than found in the wild. The main ways to get one:
- Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald: pick it from Professor Birch's bag at the start of the game in Littleroot Town.
- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: choose it as your starter from Professor Birch on Route 101.
- X and Y: obtain it as a gift from a woman in a house in Lumiose City after becoming Champion, with the Hidden Ability Speed Boost.
- Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon: receive it through the Island Scan feature on Melemele Island on certain days.
- Sword and Shield: catch it in the Wild Area through Max Raid Battles, or receive it as a gift in the Isle of Armor expansion.
- Scarlet and Violet: transfer it in via Pokémon HOME if you have one from another game, or obtain it through in-game events when available.
Outside of those, Torchic can be bred and traded, and it appears in spin-off titles and event distributions from time to time. In most generations it is not a wild encounter, so the reliable path is choosing it as a starter or receiving it as a gift.
Fun Trivia
Torchic debuted in Generation III as one of the three starter Pokémon of the Hoenn region, alongside Treecko and Mudkip. Its bright orange chick design and fiery potential made it an instant favorite when Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire launched in 2003.
-
Torchic is one of the few starter Pokémon whose type changes upon evolving. It begins as a pure Fire type, but its final evolution, Blaziken, becomes a dual Fire/Fighting type—a combination that was brand new when Generation III arrived.
-
Its name blends two words: "torch" and "chick." The Japanese name, Achamo, follows a similar idea, combining "akachan" (baby) with a sound evoking a small bird.
-
Torchic has a notable gender ratio. Like all starter Pokémon, it is male about 87.5 percent of the time, meaning female Torchic are relatively rare and often sought after by breeders.
-
In the anime, May, one of Ash's traveling companions in the Advanced Generation series, chose Torchic as her first Pokémon. It eventually evolved all the way into Blaziken, and the two shared a close bond throughout the series.
-
Torchic's hidden ability, Speed Boost, is the same one that made its evolution Blaziken a competitive powerhouse. In battles, Speed Boost raises the user's Speed stat by one stage at the end of every turn, allowing Blaziken to outpace opponents over time.
