Meet Lucario

Few Pokémon strike the balance between mystique and raw power quite like Lucario. Introduced in Generation IV, this bipedal jackal-like creature has become one of the most recognizable faces of the franchise, thanks to a design that blends martial elegance with an otherworldly aura. Standing roughly four feet tall, Lucario is covered in blue and black fur, with cream-colored accents across its chest and paws. Its most distinctive features are the black bands around its forearms and the spikes on the back of its hands, along with the appendages hanging from the sides of its head that sense the aura of living things. Its eyes glow a piercing red, hinting at the energy it channels in battle. As a Fighting and Steel dual-type, Lucario occupies a rare and versatile niche. It evolves from Riolu when leveled up with high friendship during the day, a mechanic that ties its growth directly to the bond it shares with its Trainer. In competitive play, its mixed offensive stats, access to moves like Aura Sphere and Close Combat, and the ability to Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario (which shifts it to an even more aggressive Fighting/Steel form) have kept it relevant across multiple generations. In the games, Lucario is perhaps best known as the partner of Korrina, the Fighting-type Gym Leader of Shalour City, who gifts the player a Riolu capable of Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y. It also appears as a central figure in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, where a Lucario belonging to Riley aids the player on Iron Island. The anime has given Lucario an even more prominent role. A Lucario serves as a key character in the eighth movie, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, where its strained relationship with its long-dead Trainer, Sir Aaron, forms the emotional core of the story. In the main series, Ash, May, and later Korrina all encounter Lucario, with Korrina's journey to master Mega Evolution alongside her partner becoming a major arc in the XY saga. Through both mediums, Lucario represents the idea that strength is inseparable from trust.

Abilities and Battle Strengths

Lucario is a Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon with a reputation for versatility and precision. Its unique typing grants it three immunities—Poison, and thanks to its Steel half, it shrugs off both Toxic and Sandstorm damage—while leaving it vulnerable to Fire, Fighting, and Ground attacks.

Abilities and Battle Strengths

Lucario's standout ability is Inner Focus, which prevents flinching and helps it land key moves without disruption. Its hidden ability, Justified, raises Attack when hit by Dark-type moves, turning an opponent's coverage into a setup opportunity.

In battle, Lucario thrives as a fast mixed attacker. With base 110 Attack and 115 Special Attack, it can run physical, special, or hybrid sets that make it hard to wall. Its base 90 Speed lets it outpace most unboosted threats, and access to priority in Extreme Speed and Vacuum Wave gives it a way to pick off weakened foes or revenge kill.

Its movepool is deep and flexible:

  • Close Combat and Aura Sphere provide reliable STAB on either side of the spectrum.
  • Meteor Mash and Iron Tail cover its Steel STAB and hit Fairy-types hard.
  • Swords Dance and Nasty Plot let it boost into a sweeper role.
  • Bullet Punch offers priority that also handles Fairy-types.

Mega Lucario, when available, pushes its Attack and Speed to terrifying levels, making it one of the most dangerous cleaners in formats that allow it.

Weaknesses and Common Pitfalls

Lucario's biggest problem is fragility. Its base 70 HP and 70 Defense mean even neutral physical hits can chunk it badly, and it has no reliable recovery outside of items like Leftovers. This makes it heavily dependent on prediction—one wrong switch-in can end its run.

Its weaknesses are also easy to exploit:

  • Ground attacks from the likes of Earthquake hit it hard and are common coverage.
  • Fire moves from threats like Heatran or Talonflame force it out.
  • Fighting attacks, especially from faster users, threaten it directly.

Additionally, its Speed, while good, leaves it outsped by common Choice Scarf users and naturally faster Pokémon, so it can be revenge killed if played carelessly.

Tips for Trainers

  • Run Focus Sash on offensive sets to guarantee it survives one hit and fires back, or Life Orb for maximum damage if you can manage entry hazards.
  • Pair Lucario with teammates that handle Fire, Ground, and Fighting attacks—Water and Flying-types make solid partners.
  • Use it as a late-game cleaner after checks are removed, rather than as an early wallbreaker.
  • Predict carefully: Lucario rewards reading switches. A well-timed Swords Dance on a forced switch can win games.
  • Consider priority moves as part of its core set, since Lucario's bulk rarely lets it take multiple hits.
  • Keep it away from status like paralysis, which cripples its Speed and removes its main advantage.

Evolution and Where to Find It

Riolu evolves into Lucario when leveled up with high friendship during the daytime. That single step is the entire line: Riolu is the pre-evolution, and Lucario does not evolve further. There is no Mega Evolution requirement to own one, though Lucario can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario during battle if you hold a Lucarionite, a temporary form change rather than a permanent evolution.

Because friendship drives the evolution, raising a Riolu takes patience. Its friendship must reach a high threshold, and it must level up while the in-game clock is between morning and evening. Leveling it at night will not trigger the change, so plan your grinding around the time of day.

Ways to obtain Riolu or Lucario in the main series games:

  • Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum: Riolu is available as an egg from Riley on Iron Island. Hatch it, raise its friendship, and level it up in daylight.
  • Pokemon Black 2 and White 2: Riolu appears in the Challenger's Cave and can also be found through the Dream World. Lucario is used by various trainers and is obtainable through trades in some versions.
  • Pokemon X and Y: Riolu is found in the grass on Route 22 and in the Friend Safari. Lucario is given to you during the story, making it an easy pickup.
  • Pokemon Sun and Moon / Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: Riolu appears in the Poni Grove and can be caught directly, or bred.
  • Pokemon Sword and Shield: Riolu is found in the Wild Area and on Route 8 in specific weather. Lucario can be caught in Max Raid Battles.
  • Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Same as the originals; get the egg from Riley on Iron Island.
  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Riolu appears in the wild in several areas, and Lucario can be caught in higher-level zones or Tera Raid Battles.

Across most games, breeding a Lucario or Riolu with a compatible partner produces a Riolu egg, which is often the most reliable route. Catching a Lucario directly is faster but usually comes later in the game or requires specific conditions like raids or weather.

Fun Trivia

  • Lucario was introduced in Generation IV as part of the Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl era, and it became an instant fan favorite for being the first Pokémon to combine the Fighting and Steel types.

  • Its signature ability, Steadfast, raises Lucario's Speed stat by one stage whenever it flinches, while its hidden ability, Justified, boosts its Attack when hit by a Dark-type move — an unusual trait for a Fighting-type.

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Lucario was added as a playable fighter before Diamond and Pearl had even released outside Japan, marking one of the earliest chances for many Western fans to encounter the Pokémon.

  • Lucario can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario using the Lucarionite, gaining a dramatic boost to both Attack and Special Attack, plus the Adaptability ability, which doubles the power bonus of moves matching its type.

  • According to Pokédex entries, Lucario can sense the auras of living things from over half a mile away and even read the feelings of opponents in battle, which ties directly into its aura-based lore and its connection to the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
